Rubio Tells Story About Thinking He Found Dead Body On Air Force One

Tevin McLeod - August 18, 2026

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has revealed an extraordinary incident aboard Air Force One that left him confronting a situation he apparently had no idea how to handle.

For roughly 90 minutes, Rubio watched, waited, and debated what to do as the mystery deepened thousands of feet above the ground.

Rubio said an unidentified person appeared so motionless during a flight back to the United States from China that he genuinely wondered whether the passenger had died aboard Air Force One.

“And for a significant period of this flight, it was debatable whether this person had passed away or not,” Rubio said during an Aug. 11 appearance on “The Katie Miller Podcast.”

Rubio, who appeared alongside his wife, Jeanette, said the unidentified person was lying on one of the couches inside a conference room on the presidential aircraft.

“I couldn’t see chest movement,” Rubio recalled.

“I couldn’t establish a consistent breathing pattern in the individual,” he continued.

“But I also didn’t want to wake them up on the one hand, or discover a dead body on the other,” Rubio said.

The secretary of state admitted that the possibility of simply waking someone from a deep sleep created an awkward dilemma.

“Cause it’s embarrassing if you wake them up [and they say], ‘Oh, I was just sleeping,’” Rubio explained.

“But if they were dead, like what do you do?” he asked.

“You have a dead body on the plane,” Rubio continued.

“I don’t know what the protocol for it is,” he admitted.

Rubio said the passenger’s lack of reaction to the activity taking place around them only increased his concern.

The lights were on and there were periods of significant noise, according to Rubio, but none of it appeared to disturb the sleeping passenger.

“This person was not responding to any of the stimulus,” Rubio said.

“You could see every now and then that there was like, maybe a breath, but I don’t know how you sustain life at that pace of respiration,” he added.

Jeanette Rubio then asked her husband whether he continued monitoring the person during the flight.

Rubio said he did, although his explanation added another unusual twist to the story.

He wanted to make sure he could “account for where I was” in the event that the passenger actually was dead.

“You know, then there’s going to be an investigation,” Rubio said.

The concern ultimately proved unnecessary because the unidentified person was alive and apparently had simply been sleeping extraordinarily deeply.

“But luckily it all worked out,” Rubio said.

The secretary did not reveal the person’s identity, leaving unanswered exactly who managed to sleep so soundly aboard Air Force One that one of the country’s highest-ranking officials spent approximately 90 minutes wondering whether they were still alive.

Rubio himself is apparently no stranger to catching some sleep aboard the presidential aircraft.

He told New York Magazine in January that he sometimes sleeps on one of two couches in an office on Air Force One, although he takes unusual precautions while doing it.

“But what I do is I cocoon myself in a blanket,” Rubio said.

“I cover my head,” he continued.

“I look like a mummy,” Rubio joked.

His reason involves President Donald Trump’s own habits during lengthy flights.

Rubio said he tries to conceal himself because he knows Trump will eventually leave his private cabin and begin walking around the aircraft.

“I know that at some point on the flight, he’s going to emerge from the cabin and start prowling the hallways to see who is awake,” Rubio said.

In this particular case, however, somebody apparently succeeded at sleeping through practically everything, People Magazine reported.

The person’s deep sleep was convincing enough that Rubio spent an hour and a half contemplating the possibility that Air Force One had a dead passenger aboard before the mystery finally resolved itself.
