Squad Socialist Rashida Tlaib Cruises to Primary Victory in Michigan

Tevin McLeod - August 5, 2026

Many critical elections have been called from Tuesday night, setting up several high-stakes races in November’s midterm elections.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the outspoken Democratic Socialists of America member and key figure in the progressive “Squad,” secured the Democratic nomination in Michigan’s 12th Congressional District on Tuesday night.

The win positions the four-term incumbent for a near-certain fifth term in the heavily Democratic Detroit-area seat.

The Associated Press called the race for Tlaib shortly after polls closed, with the incumbent capturing between roughly 64 and 74 percent of the vote depending on the stage of the count.

Tlaib defeated former state Rep. Shanelle Jackson, who took about 16 to 26 percent, and Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen, who finished in the single digits to low teens.

The 12th District, which includes parts of Detroit, Dearborn, Livonia, and surrounding communities in Wayne and Oakland counties, is rated solidly Democratic by the Cook Political Report.

Tlaib’s victory makes her the overwhelming favorite in the November general election against Republican James D. Hooper, who ran unopposed in his party’s primary.

Tlaib defeated Hooper in 2024 by a wide margin of nearly 70 to 25 percent.

Tlaib’s win comes as part of a broader pattern of success for progressive and DSA-aligned candidates this primary season.

Democratic Socialists of America-backed contenders have unseated longtime Democratic incumbents elsewhere, including in New York, signaling an expansion of far-left influence within the party.

Tlaib and fellow Squad members have long argued that progressive platforms on issues like Medicare for All, housing, and foreign policy would define the Democratic future—a claim moderates once rejected after 2020 losses but that primary results this cycle appear to reinforce.

Ahead of the primary, Tlaib framed her campaign around her record of constituent service and unapologetic progressive positions.

In a late July interview, she said voters in the district “want somebody that’s unbought and unapologetic,” emphasizing hands-on casework that helps people navigate everyday challenges.

“Getting people through everyday challenges and issues is as important as any bill I could ever pass because it changed lives immediately,” she stated.

Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress, has built her political brand on vocal criticism of U.S. policy toward Israel, calls to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and advocacy for expansive social programs.

The DSA, which endorsed her re-election, praised her in a statement as “a strong voice in the halls of the Capitol, unapologetically standing up for the working class everywhere,” specifically citing her fights for affordable housing, clean air and water, and “an end to the genocide in Gaza.”

Her primary opponents offered limited contrast. Jackson, who also challenged Tlaib unsuccessfully in 2024, has expressed support for some social justice causes but differed on Israel, saying she backs the Jewish state while favoring diplomacy.

Nolen, the local mayor, failed to gain significant traction. Neither mounted a serious fundraising challenge to Tlaib, who reported millions in campaign funds.

Critics on the right view Tlaib’s continued success as further evidence of the Democratic Party’s leftward shift.

Her membership in the DSA and history of high-profile confrontations—ranging from floor speeches to social media posts—have made her a frequent target of conservative lawmakers and commentators.

Supporters, meanwhile, celebrate the outcome as validation of grassroots progressive organizing in urban and diverse districts. With the primary behind her, Tlaib now turns to the general election in a district that has reliably delivered large Democratic margins.

The November contest is expected to be low-drama locally, even as national attention remains fixed on whether the progressive wing continues consolidating power inside the Democratic Party ahead of future cycles.
