Vice President J.D. Vance said Tuesday that the Department of Justice is actively looking into Rep. Ilhan Omar, escalating scrutiny surrounding the Minnesota Democrat and raising fresh political questions heading into the midterm election cycle.
Vance made the remarks during a White House press briefing while temporarily filling in for press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who is on maternity leave.
The exchange began when Daily Caller correspondent Reagan Reese asked about longstanding allegations involving Omar’s immigration history, marriage timeline and prior campaign finance scrutiny.

Vance declined to go into specifics but strongly suggested the matter is under federal review.
“I don’t want to prejudge an investigation,” Vance said.
“You read the things about Ilhan Omar, and about who she married, and whether she didn’t marry this person or that person,” he continued.
“It certainly seems like something fishy is there.”
“But everyone is entitled to equal justice under the laws.”
Vance then appeared to directly confirm that the Justice Department is reviewing the matter.
“So we’re going to investigate it, we’re going to take a look at it,” he said.

“If we think there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime, and that’s something that the Department of Justice is looking at right now.”
The comments mark the strongest public indication yet from the Trump administration that Omar may currently be under federal scrutiny.
Neither the Justice Department nor Omar’s congressional office immediately responded to requests for comment following Vance’s remarks.
Omar has repeatedly denied wrongdoing over the years and has dismissed Republican accusations against her as politically motivated attacks.
The controversy surrounding Omar has lingered for years and has included allegations tied to campaign spending, tax matters, personal relationships and immigration questions.
Conservatives have frequently raised questions about her marriage history and whether any prior relationships may have intersected with immigration law issues.
No criminal charges have ever been filed against Omar related to those allegations.
The renewed scrutiny also comes as Republicans in Minnesota continue pressing questions surrounding the massive Feeding Our Future fraud scandal, one of the largest COVID-era fraud cases in American history.
Republican lawmakers have attempted to connect Omar to individuals or organizations involved in that scandal, particularly through her support for pandemic-era food assistance expansions under the federal MEALS Act.
Earlier this month, Republicans on a Minnesota House committee attempted to subpoena Omar for documents related to the investigation.
That effort failed after Democrats blocked the move in a tied committee vote.
GOP lawmakers have argued that pandemic waivers and loosened oversight created conditions that allowed widespread abuse in child nutrition programs.
Omar’s office has declined invitations to testify before the committee.
Vance’s remarks also referenced broader concerns about fairness in how investigations are handled.
“Everyone is entitled to equal justice under the laws,” he said.
The vice president’s comments are likely to intensify political pressure on Omar as Republicans make corruption and fraud investigations a centerpiece of their 2026 campaign messaging.
If the Justice Department is actively reviewing Omar, it would represent a significant development involving one of the Democratic Party’s highest-profile progressive lawmakers.
At the same time, Vance did not outline specific allegations, identify the scope of any inquiry or provide evidence of criminal conduct.
That leaves major questions unanswered about what exactly, if anything, the DOJ is examining.
For now, the political impact may come faster than any legal developments.
Republicans are certain to seize on the vice president’s comments.
Democrats will likely argue this is another example of political targeting.
But Vance’s words were unmistakable, The Daily Caller reported: “If we think there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime.”
That statement alone is likely to keep Omar in the political spotlight in the days ahead.
