Elon Reeve Musk grew up in Pretoria, emigrated to Canada in 1989, and studied physics and economics at the University of Pennsylvania before moving to California. In 1995 he co-founded Zip2 (sold to Compaq in 1999), then X.com, which became PayPal and sold to eBay in 2002 — the exit that funded his next chapter.

He founded SpaceX in 2002 to cut the cost of access to space and make multi-planetary life plausible. He joined Tesla as an early investor in 2004 and became CEO in 2008, pushing the company from near-death to the world’s most valuable automaker at various points. He co-founded OpenAI in 2015 (later left), Neuralink in 2016, and The Boring Company in 2017; acquired Twitter for about $44 billion in 2022 and rebranded it X; and launched xAI in 2023. In 2025 he became the de facto face of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under Trump, then exited that role in May 2025 amid a public break with the White House.

  • Tesla: Early investor (2004); CEO since 2008; owns roughly ~11% of the public company (ex-unvested awards), per Forbes.

  • SpaceX: Founded 2002; Falcon, Dragon, Starship, Starlink; IPO in June 2026 at a headline valuation near $2 trillion on day one (volatile thereafter). Musk’s stake often cited near ~38% including options (Forbes).

  • Twitter/X (~$44B, 2022): Private take-private; later merged into the xAI structure.

  • xAI: Founded 2023; later combined with X and brought under the SpaceX corporate umbrella in 2026 (deal headlines valued the combined entity in the trillion-dollar range — treat as deal-period valuation, not a fixed public market price).

  • June 2026: SpaceX goes public; Musk briefly crosses the U.S.-dollar trillionaire threshold before a subsequent stock pullback.

  • Nov. 2025: Tesla board/shareholders advance a landmark long-term pay package (headline “$1 trillion” over ~10 years if extreme milestones — including very high market-cap targets — are hit).

  • May 2025: Leaves DOGE / Trump orbit after a public feud; returns focus to Tesla, SpaceX, and AI.

“When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor.” — Elon Musk

  • Workplace and product safety: Critics cite aggressive timelines, labor disputes, and Autopilot/FSD safety debates at Tesla.

  • X / Twitter: Mass layoffs, advertiser flight, content-moderation fights, and accusations of amplifying extremism after the 2022 acquisition.

  • SEC and governance: Long history of market-moving tweets, settlement history, and fights over Tesla board independence and pay.

  • Politics: Largest donor dynamics in 2024; DOGE’s federal cuts and Musk’s unclear formal authority drew lawsuits and ethics scrutiny.

  • OpenAI feud: Left the nonprofit he co-founded; later sued and competed via xAI.

Forbes’ real-time estimate put Musk around ~$900B–$1.1T at various points in 2026 (he briefly crossed $1T after the SpaceX IPO, then fell under that line as shares moved). As of mid/late October 2026, Forbes has listed him near ~$924B on some trading days. Treat all figures as mark-to-market estimates dominated by Tesla + SpaceX stakes — they move daily. Estimates vary by source (Forbes vs. Bloomberg).

Elon Musk is the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX. He previously co-founded Zip2 and PayPal, owns X, and founded Neuralink, The Boring Company, and xAI. He was briefly a central figure in the Trump administration’s DOGE effort in 2025.

Zip2, X.com/PayPal (co-founder), SpaceX, Tesla (CEO), Neuralink, The Boring Company, xAI, and X (owner). He co-founded OpenAI but later left.

Forbes and Bloomberg put him in the high hundreds of billions to ~$1 trillion range in 2026, depending on the day and SpaceX/Tesla marks. Not a cash pile — mostly equity.

SpaceX’s public debut, Tesla pay packages, AI competition, X politics, and fallout from his 2025 White House role keep him in near-constant headlines.
